Canon Powershot S2 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.67 (out of 10)
The successor to the image-stabilized S1 IS has more than just a slightly expanded waistline. The Canon PowerShot S2 IS boasts an upgrade to a 5-megapixel sensor (from 3.2), a 12X zoom lens (up from 10X), and a 1.8-inch LCD (vs. 1.5 inches). A Digic II processor and a high-speed USB connection speed things up. Add a full complement of manual controls, as well as high-quality video with stereo sound, and the S2 IS is sure to find its way into the hands of photo enthusiasts who want to shoot long and print big.

The Canon PowerShot S2 IS takes the PowerShot S1 concept we examined precisely 1 year ago, and moves it to its next evolutionary level.

The S2 continues the use of an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), but boosts the image stabilized Ultrasonic zoom lens to a 12X power and increases the CCD resolution from 3 to 5 megapixel.

While the body design of the S2 follows that of the S1, a close look at the PowerShot S2 IS' s exterior reveals a few differences. Some of these are a reflection of enhancements made to the camera's performance, while others improve its ergonomics.

The Canon PowerShot S2 IS is the sequel to an extremely popular long zoom camera, the 3.2 megapixel S1 IS. The 5.0 megapixel Canon S2 IS and its predecessor follow in the footsteps of a well-received model from four years past, the 2.6-megapixel PowerShot Pro90 IS.

The PowerShot S2 IS is Canon's much-anticipated successor to the hugely popular S1 IS, bringing it in line with the rest of the increasingly competitive 5 megapixel big zoom market. The good news is that the S2 is no 'minor upgrade' - almost every aspect of the S1's specification and performance has been improved or refined, the body is entirely new and some of the most serious problems found on the original model have been addressed. But is it enough?

Last year's PowerShot S1 IS was one of the most popular ultra zoom cameras on the market. It was one of the first "hybrid" cameras to successfully combine the best features from digital cameras and camcorders. Earlier this year Canon introduced its replacement - the PowerShot S2 IS ($499). The S2 isn't just a higher resolution sensor in the same old body - you get a whole lot more.

The S2 keeps all of the S1's trademark features including optical image stabilization, a rotating LCD, an excellent movie mode, full manual controls, and support for conversion lenses.

Is the PowerShot S2 the ultimate ultra zoom camera? Find out now in our review!

All in all the Canon Powershot S2 IS is an impressive camera. As well as its 12x optical zoom it comes packed with features. In fact as far as features go it is not that different to the most advanced digital compact cameras. You do pay a premium for the features though and it could be a tough call as to whether you go for this camera or one of its cheaper competitors. You will need to make the most of all the features this camera offers to get the full value for money.

The Canon PowerShot S2 picks up where the PowerShot S1 IS left off, though not perhaps in the ways some might expect: it improved upon the S1's strengths while still falling short in all the same areas. The S2 makes significant strides in the push towards hybrid functionality, adding stereo recording, manual audio controls, dual recording buttons, and a wind reduction function. The 12x optical zoom lens is extremely versatile and includes selectable stabilization settings to optimize performance and distinguish it from other ultra zoom models-and if it's not versatile enough, the user has the option to purchase compatible accessory lenses for increased wide angle and telephoto capabilities.

The Canon Powershot S2 IS, quite a mouth full, is the successor of the S1. The Powershot S2 IS was officially introduced in April of this year and is available for some months now. The Canon S2 IS camera features an impressive optical zoom of 12x combined with an almost indispensable image stabilisation. When used to working with this function, you don't want to do without it anymore. The specifications of the Canon Powershot S2 IS are impressive; 5 Megapixels, 12x zoom with optical image stabilisation, high video clip resolution and the already rather famous DIGIC II processor.

Another day, another mega zoom digicam with a 12x optical zoom and built-in optical image stabilization. This one is far from plain vanilla, however, since the PowerShot S2 IS is the replacement for the popular, year-old S1 IS. Since this is the consumer electronics business, for the same initial asking price ($499) you get higher resolution (5 megapixels instead of 3MP), a more powerful zoom (12x versus 10x), a larger LCD screen, and more importantly, the improved DIGIC II processor that speeds up all the operations (so the camera is very responsive with a minimum amount of shutter lag). And it takes very accurate images, something Canon is well known for.

We look to superzooms to get us close to the action, to help us capture important shots from afar. But a long zoom isn't everything. Although Canon's latest superzoom, the PowerShot S2 IS, has an amazing 12X optical zoom, that doesn't make up for some of the camera's shortfalls.
